07/26/10 Steep Ravine Canyon

LEAF at lunch

Steep Ravine Canyon is spectacular. This year's rainfall has left the canyon lush, and green with water cascading from every arroyo. We choose this location for the endless opportunities to practice applying the principles of ecology as tools for making observations and describing the connections and relationships among the members of this ecosystem. We tested water quality and were fortunate and observant enough to find a nest of fish eggs and an egg sack at our sampling location in the stream. We were pleased to have another chance to practice identifying plant species and found we remembered pretty much every type of plant Jody had shared with us while working with her last Tuesday at SPAWN.

07/28/10 Reflections on RECOLOGY

“It was really interesting, I learned a lot and although it was smelly it was still pretty cool. I thought it was amazing that the artists could make such funky things out of old recycled materials such as: bicycle frames car tires, old picnic benches, wire, paint ect. I felt bad about creating so much trash.”

“ Recology was a very interesting place, I learned a lot and it was shocking to me to see how much garbage one San Francisco neighborhood could throw out in 24 hours.”

Think Outside the Bottle 21 Day Challenge

We are doing the 21 Day Challenge to break the habit of bringing disposable plastic water bottles to school. Each child that has and uses a water bottle for 21 days at school will have met the challenge. Students that complete the challenge using a LEAF water bottle will receive a five dollar refund.

Each child has to be seen in class with his or her water bottle in order to be a part of the challenge. Note—the challenge is not mandatory for any child, so no one should feel bad or left out for not participating in the challenge or having a LEAF water bottle.

Each LEAF member will keep track of who has reusable water bottles in his or her advisory. The advisories that don’t have a LEAF member will have a LEAF member from a nearby advisory check in each morning. We will keep track with a list with the name of the advisor and advisees. We will put a daily check by the name of each person that has a water bottle.

Each lower school teacher will have a sheet of paper, a lot like the attendance sheet. Every morning, when the teachers take attendance, they will also check off a box for each child that brings in and uses a bottle.

07/26/10 Reflections Steep Ravine Canyon

“It was fun getting wet, but freezing. I had lots of fun gathering water samples but all the time it was freezing.”

“It was cold and foggy. It was beautiful and fun going down. I liked learning about redwoods, that only special plants live around them and leaping from rock to rock up and down the stream testing water quality.”

“It was fun, cold, great climbing and interesting seeing all the green and how the streams split up, divided and came together again”

I felt very proud of myself when I kissed a slug. It was so cold, but there were such great things to do and see.”

“It was so cold. I couldn’t feel my fingers, but it was very fun eating lunch inside a redwood tree and finding the fish eggs and egg sack!”

“The weather felt like that in a rainforest. The hike was fun, because I saw lots of banana slugs, which I haven’t seen in a while.”

“I loved the quiet solo part of the hike, listening to the waterfalls, touching the soft moss and looking up at the redwood trees. At the end, the dense forest opened right up into gold hills and blue-ocean in front of us, and I was blown away by the beauty of this place.”
