LEAF Application Process 2011

Creating Leaders for Sustainability in San Francisco Schools

Are you passionate about making a difference?

Join the LEAF fellowship for adventures and projects that will change your relationship with the planet!

Together we explore the systems that make ecologies work well, and bring those ideas into our own communities. Create plans with your team to change the ways your school community impacts its environment. Be a leader for the change you want to see in your world!

As a LEAF Leader, you will:

Ø Share your ideas with other student leaders and mentors during the school year to prepare a plan for your community.

Ø Join us for two weeks of planning, learning and adventure in our LEAF Academy summer session!

Ø Educate others about environmental issues in your community.

Ø Help your school community move towards environmental sustainability, with the help of mentors and team members.

Ø Help the next LEAF leaders by sharing your experience!

The Program requires a one-year commitment to the team meetings, and attendance at the summer session.

2011 L.E.A.F. Summer Session: July 18^th-July 29^th

Cost of Program: All accepted students receive a full scholarship for 2011

Your application will include an Essay, telling us about your interests.

Application Deadline: March 1st, 2011

Choose one of these topics to address in a format of your choosing. You may write an essay, create a movie, perform a speech, create a poster, or use any other form of expression.

2) What are you passionate about changing in the world?

3) Describe a time when you met a challenge with success.

4) Describe a sustainable relationship with the Earth.

5) Why is it important to learn about ecology?

Reflections on GLIDE 07/23/10

07/28/10 Reflections on RECOLOGY

“It was really interesting, I learned a lot and although it was smelly it was still pretty cool. I thought it was amazing that the artists could make such funky things out of old recycled materials such as: bicycle frames car tires, old picnic benches, wire, paint ect. I felt bad about creating so much trash.”

“ Recology was a very interesting place, I learned a lot and it was shocking to me to see how much garbage one San Francisco neighborhood could throw out in 24 hours.”

“ It was fun, smelly, interesting, and I learned a lot. I’ll figure out a way to create less trash at home.”

Think Outside the Bottle 21 Day Challenge

We are doing the 21 Day Challenge to break the habit of bringing disposable plastic water bottles to school. Each child that has and uses a water bottle for 21 days at school will have met the challenge. Students that complete the challenge using a LEAF water bottle will receive a five dollar refund.

Each child has to be seen in class with his or her water bottle in order to be a part of the challenge. Note—the challenge is not mandatory for any child, so no one should feel bad or left out for not participating in the challenge or having a LEAF water bottle.

Each LEAF member will keep track of who has reusable water bottles in his or her advisory. The advisories that don’t have a LEAF member will have a LEAF member from a nearby advisory check in each morning. We will keep track with a list with the name of the advisor and advisees. We will put a daily check by the name of each person that has a water bottle.

Each lower school teacher will have a sheet of paper, a lot like the attendance sheet. Every morning, when the teachers take attendance, they will also check off a box for each child that brings in and uses a bottle.

07/26/10 Reflections Steep Ravine Canyon

“It was fun getting wet, but freezing. I had lots of fun gathering water samples but all the time it was freezing.”

“It was cold and foggy. It was beautiful and fun going down. I liked learning about redwoods, that only special plants live around them and leaping from rock to rock up and down the stream testing water quality.”

“It was fun, cold, great climbing and interesting seeing all the green and how the streams split up, divided and came together again”

I felt very proud of myself when I kissed a slug. It was so cold, but there were such great things to do and see.”

“It was so cold. I couldn’t feel my fingers, but it was very fun eating lunch inside a redwood tree and finding the fish eggs and egg sack!”

“The weather felt like that in a rainforest. The hike was fun, because I saw lots of banana slugs, which I haven’t seen in a while.”

“It was very pretty, and very moist. It was really fun testing the water quality.”

“I was astounded by how lush, wet and dense the biomass was there. It felt like everything was very alive! What a special place!”

“I loved the quiet solo part of the hike, listening to the waterfalls, touching the soft moss and looking up at the redwood trees. At the end, the dense forest opened right up into gold hills and blue-ocean in front of us, and I was blown away by the beauty of this place.”

“The ravine was bursting with life! The sight of the fish eggs in the stream thrilled me! Our young scientists demonstrated they love getting their hands wet and dirty in the field collecting data! They were pros at using our digital lab equipment!”
